CCNT Certificate Program

The TIA Certified in Convergent Network Technologies (CCNT) program validates that an individual has the core knowledge required to sell and support convergence services.
CCNT fulfills the needs of companies within the communications industry by   presenting broad educational convergence training required for sales and support professionals. CCNT certificate an un-proctored,open-book program consisting of approximately 450 questions in six tests. Students who successfully complete the six-module test will receive a TIA CCNT credential certificate.

bullet CCNT Program Modules

The CCNT certificate program is a broad, knowledge-based introduction to core terms, concepts and skills in convergence technologies. To obtain this industry-valued credential, an individual must pass six competency tests in the following disciplines:

  • Basic Telecommunications explores analog and digital concepts, and introduces telecommunications fundamentals such as networks, business communications systems, signaling, Internet telephony and switching.

  • Basic Data Communications builds a student's knowledge of related software and hardware. This module introduces the technology of network architecture, packet switching, fiber optics, data communication channels and data communication devices.

  • Computer Telephone Integration (CTI) Essentials introduces the dynamics of connecting a computer to a telephone system for routing calls  through switches. This program also teaches the technology of applications, architecture and system development.

  • Local Area Networks (LANs) develops critical understanding of the concepts and technology of LAN topologies, information transfer, transmission techniques, media standards and network management.

  • Broadband Technologies discusses the need for transmitting multiple signal types simultaneously by way of divided channels, and then explores the technology of voice and data integration, frame relay, SONET,ATM/cell relay, SMDS, BISDN, DSL and VPN.

  • Voice over IP (VoIP) Essentials teaches the principles of transmitting voice calls and fax over the Internet, and explores VoIP networks, bandwidth compression, the Gateway, packet prioritization, RSVP,H.320 and H.323, and WAN engineering issues.

  • What is CCNT?
CCNT is a widely recognized job-role certification program that offers employers metrics to measure their employees’ knowledge and gives  employees the opportunity to distinguish themselves in their careers.
The following six exams are required to earn a CCNT certificate:

  • Local Area Networks (LAN).

  • Basic Telecommunications.

  • Basic Data Communications.

  • Computer-Telephony Integration (CTI) Essentials.

  • Voice Over IP (VoIP) Essentials.

  • Broadband Technologies.

Back to Questions

  • What is Convergence Technology (CT)?
Convergence technology (CT) is one of the buzzwords in the IT and telecommunications industry. Convergence technology is the merging of voice, video and data on a single network, integrating telecommunications and computer technology in a way that opens powerful new avenues of communication. In plain English, CT is the intersection of telephone, TV,cable and Internet networks.
Historically, companies usually offered either voice or data products and services. With increased customer demand for complete solutions, companies now have to consider offering both. For example, a CT professional may be asked to create a call routing system via an IP-enabled PBX on a digital platform that is both scalable and can be upgraded with software; to install an IP-enabled PBX connected to multiple remote sites with a frame relay network using routers and IP sets; or to create a host site using a QoS switchto enhance the voice part of the application so there’s no latency for voice.

Back to Questions

  • Who are the players?
The CT industry consists of suppliers (manufacturers and service providers) and channel partners (VARs, resellers) that produce, sell and distribute local and wireless networking technologies as well as telephony, voice over IP and broadband tools. Leading companies in CT include AT&T, Avaya, Cisco, Nortel, Siemens, SBC and Toshiba. These companies and others that offer convergence technologies have built internal teams of telecommunications professionals that handle everyday voice and data issues, perform maintenance tasks and install new systems. These teams need to understand and implement convergence technologies. CT training and certification helps individuals who were historically data-focused to understand voice technologies and helps those who focused on voice to understand data technologies. Training alsogives professionals the tools to enhance job performance, gain industry knowledge and differentiate themselves from others working in the telecommunications industry.

Back to Questions

  • Who will benefit from CCNT certification?
CCNT certification is geared toward anyone who wants to remain current in the telecommunications industry, including network administrators and  engineers, telecommunications engineers and consultants and telecommunications and data communication instructors. It is also well-suited to anyone preparing for CompTIA’s Network+ certification. Individuals in the following job roles will benefit from training and certification in Computer Telephony:

  • Network engineers.

  • Network administrators.

  • Telecommunications technicians.

  • Data/Internet/telecommunications sales professionals.

  • Telecom sales engineers.

  • IP/data product managers.

  • Telecom account managers.

  • Professionals in CT or IT.

  • Technical professionals in CT.

Back to Questions

  • Who is using the CCNT Program?
More than 3,000 individuals are certified nationwide (and several times that number are in progress), and the program is gaining recognition as a cost-effective way of preparing channel partners to more effectively market, sell and service convergence technologies through a better understanding of customer requirements, emerging applications and both telephony and data communications technologies.
In addition, more than 100 companies are using CCNT within their organizations, including Avaya, Cisco, Click2Learn, Collin County Community College District, Community College of Denver, Expanets, IBM Learning Services, KnowledgePlanet, New Horizons Computer Learning Centers, Mitel, Saba, Siemens, South Carolina Technical College, SBC Communications, 3Com, THINQ and VerticalNet.
